Instructions on how to behave before, during and after an earthquake. Useful tips on how to react in the event of an earthquake.
We cannot predict the earthquake and that is why ground shaking disturbs every human being and causes fear and stress. Good information and knowledge in these situations can be of great help, so in this article we remind you how to behave before, during and after an earthquake.
Before the earthquake (preparation)
- Prepare an evacuation plan - identify safe places in your home, office or school where you will take shelter during an earthquake.
- Secure furniture and objects - secure heavy objects (cabinets, shelves, televisions) so that they do not fall during the shaking.
- Prepare an emergency kit - keep an emergency bag within easy reach (water, food, first aid, flashlight, medicine, documents).
- Write down important phone numbers - emergency services, family, friends.
- Learn how to turn off gas, water and electricity, it is important to know where the main electrical switches, water and gas valves are located and how to close them - this can prevent fires and additional damage.
- Participate in evacuation drills - especially if you live in seismically active areas.

During earthquake
At the time of an earthquake, it is important to stay calm and not panic. In situations like this, it is quite difficult, but it is precisely your composure that can save your life. The earthquake itself does not kill, but accidents and injuries occur when you panic and run to get out of the building as quickly as possible.
Therefore, find a safe place inside the building and take shelter there until the shaking passes. When the earthquake passes, head outside the building and get as far away as possible from buildings, poles and objects that could endanger you. If you live or are in a building that has an elevator, never use it to evacuate!
If you are indoors:
- Stay in the building you are in - do not run outside as you may be hit by falling objects.
- Crouch under a sturdy table or load-bearing wall.
- Cover your head and neck with your hands or a pillow.
- Hold on until the shaking stops.
- Move away from windows, glass and heavy objects - they can break and cause injury.
- If there is no shelter, protect your head - crouch against a wall and cover your head with your hands.
If you are outdoors:
- Move away from buildings, trees, electricity poles and bridges.
- Crouch on the ground and protect your head - stay outdoors until the earthquake stops.
- Watch out for possible building collapse - if you are near tall buildings, try to move away.
If you are in a vehicle:
- Stop the vehicle in a safe place away from buildings, bridges and power lines.
- Stay in the vehicle until the earthquake stops.
- Continue driving carefully and avoid bridges, tunnels and damaged roads.
After the earthquake
- Be prepared for aftershocks, aftershocks often follow the "main" earthquake.
- Check for injuries to yourself or anyone near you - provide first aid if necessary.
- Turn off gas, water and electricity - if you suspect gas leak, do not use lighters or switches.
- Do not use the elevator - it may get stuck due to damage.
- Leave the building carefully - if it is damaged, move to a safe place.
- Follow the instructions of the relevant authorities - get information via radio or official sources.
- Avoid dangerous areas - collapsed buildings, unstable structures and power lines.
- Do not use the telephone except in emergencies - to keep the lines free for emergency services.
- Help neighbors and vulnerable people - the elderly, children and people with disabilities.
